Houseplants that Can Clean and Green Your Home

Published on May 2nd, 2011

I am always looking for a way to make greener choices. I TRY to use reusable bags, I recycle and I JUST started to compost (which has been great except that I have NO place to bring the dirt!). But the one thing that I didn’t realize is that houseplants can actually make your home more clean and more green. I always knew that houseplants beautify a space but I never realized that they can actually help filter the air and balance the internal humidity of your home.

But some houseplants are actually better than others at filtering the air and keeping your home’s air clean and pure. Here are the top 10 house plants that will actually improve the air quality of your home. Each average sized houseplant can clean up to 90 square feet of your space, provided that you ceiling height is 8-9 feet:

  • Areca palm

  • Reed palm

  • Dwarf date palm

  • Boston fern

  • Janet Craig dracaena

  • English ivy

  • Australian sword fern

  • Peace Lily

  • Rubber plant

  • Weeping fig
