How To: Etch a Pumpkin

Published on September 21st, 2016

Etching adds another, glowing layer to your jack-o-lanterns. Give it a try with these easy tips.

Tools & Materials:
Woodworking, carving tools
Permanent marker
Clay loop
Acrylic paint (optional)

Inexpensive woodworking tools and a clay loop work great for etching. They can be found in craft stores. When you buy a kit you’ll get a whole bunch of sizes for large and small details.

Start by drawing the design with a permanent marker.

Using the carving tools, remove the top layer of the pumpkin, so the lighter flesh is exposed.

To add more colors and dimensions to your design, accent with paint.

Carve out a design like you would for a regular jack-o-lantern, and use etching to enhance the design.

Not all the designs have to be spooky. This lovely organic, leaf etching makes a beautiful centerpiece.

The possibilities are endless, so have fun etching this Halloween.
