Last week I got to take this whole bride thing for a test drive. I never considered myself to be THAT girl. You know the wedding dress crazy, love getting hair and makeup done type of girl. That might all change. My friend, celeb fashion photographer, Franco LaCosta offered to do a pre-wedding photo shoot for me with a bunch of dresses that he borrowed Kleinfelds, of Say Yes To The Dress fame.

Franco was able to arrange a photo shoot at the Zeze Floral Shop on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, but before we started taking pics, I had to get all dolled up. For that, Franco arranged with his fun-loving and fashionable friend Peter for me to get changed at the home of 9X Tony Award winner (sounds a little like, Rommy Rune). When I got to the beautiful penthouse apartment, the dresses were festooned over every doorway. A lot of these dresses were not exactly the kind that I would choose for myself and I LOVED that! Many of them were unbelievably bejeweled and I once I got a chance to see some of the price tags I understood they other reason why I might not exactly pick these for myself. They were WAY out of my price range (but I am sure worth every penny).

T Cooper, my new stylist friend hooked me up by taming my crazy head of hair and Franco consulted on every detail.

A little champagne loosened me up and got me in the mood to doing a little RuPauling, it can be so nerve wracking to be photographed.

Here are a few of the final pics that Franco took, I can’t believe how beautiful they turned out!!! Full disclosure, (there was a little bit of photoshopping going on, namely the -no amount of Zumba will get rid of- back fat). You may also notice, that in this first picture, my hands were cropped out. It might be because I have been called “man hands” and “gorilla hands” even by my closest family, and it really doesn’t bother me. I love my hands! They are hard working, get down and dirty hands! Sandpaper hands or not, they are the only ones that I’ve got and I love ‘em!

Then we dragged Stephen out of work to do a couple of shots together. Yes, he IS wearing a red shirt with a tuxedo jacket and bow tie…but it doesn’t look half bad!

I love this one of us, I can’t wait to make our love official on May 19th!

For me it was never a tough decision. I knew I wanted to get married in Puerto Rico. Growing up [...]

For me it was never a tough decision. I knew I wanted to get married in Puerto Rico. Growing up in New York City with parents born and raised there, I had heard all of the stories, how life used to be there, how they came from families that were poor, but proud and hardworking. How they didn’t have much, but everything they did have was either hand made, or fixed by hand because they could never afford anything new.

I have always tried to keep a strong tie to Puerto Rico. As a kid I would go ever summer with my parents, then as I got older I started going by myself and staying the whole summer with family and friends. In college I did a semester at Universidad Interamericana de San German in Puerto Rico so that I could get to know my PR peers. So it only seemed natural that Puerto Rico would be the place where I would make my love for my main squeeze, Stephen, official.

But what I didn’t realize while I was daydreaming about the super Latin wedding I was going to have in idilic Viejo San Juan, was that the love of my life, Stephen, was going to be a nice, white, mid-western boy.

Sure. Race doesn’t matter, for me it never has. (You could have filled the seats in the United Nations with all of the different people I have dated. The toughest was Muhammed, during Ramadan. I could never get used to the no eating until sunset thing.)

But, it still kind of does. Especially when it comes to a wedding. Puerto Ricans are a rare breed, my family included. They will jokingly refer to people’s short comings, saying things like, “ven aca gorda!” or in English, “come here fat one”, is something totally ok to say to your little chunky cousin, or the fat lady on the corner. If you are blind they will call you “el ciego”, “the blind one”, and if you are dark, you will get called, “el negro” “the black one”. This is all meant with all due respect, but is something that I have never, ever, encountered in Michigan, where Stephen’s family is from.

Stephen’s family comes from a long line of European ancestors. He is the classic, White, American mutt with a family lineage that goes waayyy back to England but also to Scotland, Ukraine and Poland.

His family, the Davies/Davidsons are smart and well read but also incredibly polite and in some ways, not so upfront. They will go to great lengths not to make anyone feel different, weird or out of place. I can imagine that Stephen’s mom could have an entire conversation with conjoined twins without ever saying to them “Oh, I didn’t even realize that you two were sisters.” They are just those people. Salt of the earth types.

Me and My Mom in the Kitchen!

My and My Dad After Working On Our Treehouse!

My family, is the complete opposite. We point out the obvious, we yell, we argue, we cry, we scream, we make fun of each other, we dance, we cook, we eat, we yell some more. In his family, they talk, they debate, they read, they write, they research, they cook, they eat and they nap. So making these seemingly different people comfortable at our wedding has been a worthy challenge. Here are some of the things that I am incorporating to make our wedding as enjoyable as possible for our families, old and new.

Keep it Bilingual
We are doing everything, for the most part, bilingually. This is so important when you are blending too cultures, even if a good chunk of the family speaks perfectly good English, like mine does, I feel that it is important to give a nod to where you came from through language. It sets the tone for the event and says, we are merging here, blending if you will. But no one culture is going to be more important than the other. Here are our invites. We tried to include Spanish wherever possible!

The FRONG and BACK of our Wedding Invitation

The INSIDE of our wedding invitation- A MAP!

The Outside of the RSVP card- In Spanish & English

Choose a location where you don’t have to be a local to get around.
There is a reason that tourists love Viejo San Juan, for example, because it is insanely beautiful and incredibly historic. Don’t let an area being a tourist “hot spot” dissuade you from choosing a wedding location. Remember, your new family are essentially tourists, they’re only for your wedding. (They are not real Puerto Ricans until they have passed out after drinking too many rum coconuts at my Abuela Flor’s coercion).

The Streets of Viejo San Juan

Include BOTH families as much as possible.
My family is going to feel snug as a bug being back in PR and family that lives there basically just rolled out of bed and made it over to the wedding, so the focus has to be on how to make your visiting family feel included. It is for that reason that we asked Stephen’s aunt, who is an Episcopal deacon, to marry us. My mom wasn’t too thrilled that I wasn’t getting married Catholic, and in a church, but the ceremony is going to mean so much more to have her marry us. She is like Stephen’s second mom and he loves her dearly (we will have one of my family translate too).

Make it a buffet!
Nothing is more impressive than having a huge spread of ethnic eats. It is one sure fire way to introduce your new family to your culture. Having a buffet also ensures that people can eat what they want to eat, a sit down dinner means your forced to eat what you’ve got, even if it is too spicy or your allergic to it.

Make sure everyone has something to eat!
When you are dealing with so many different types of people, with very different dietary restrictions, it is important to make sure that everyone has something to chew on! We are taking into account Aunt Bev’s peanut allergy, my Prima, Wanda’s gluten free diet, my Tio’s lactose intolerance, and my own vegetarian-ness.

Keep the food typical but with the spicy stuff on the side. In Puerto Rico, we like our food hot, both in temperature and in spice, but some people may not want to have their heads explode from so much heat. So we are putting additional mojo, and pique, the garlic and olive oil sauce and hot sauce on the side so people can make things as spicy as they need to be.

Remember your families are getting married too so make sure that each side feels safe, comfortable and equal.

Wish me luck on the big day!!!

Hopefully we will have THIS much fun at OUR wedding!

I was recently at a flea market in New York City. One of the vendors had a box of postcards labeled “FREE.” I couldn’t resist and picked out a few. As luck would have it, a couple postcards had a vertical layout, and I thought they would be really nice light switch covers.

I decided to make two versions: one with a plastic switch cover which cost me 49¢ and one with a wooden switch cover which cost $4.99. Both are inexpensive, but in comparison, the 49¢ version seemed like a steal.

To make the plastic version, trace the light switch cover using a pencil and a piece of tracing paper.

Flip the tracing paper over so the tracing is facing the front of the postcard. Figure out where you want to make your cuts, tape the tracing paper to the postcard and retrace the outline of the light switch cover.

The tracing paper and the original drawing will act like carbon paper.

Cut the postcard to fit your light switch cover.

If you want to use an adhesive on the back of the postcard to secure it to the cover you’re more than welcome to. I just let the screws hold it in place because the postcard paper is stiff enough to keep it in place.

Screw the light switch cover into place. This is such a simple (and cheap) update, I may have to do it all over the house.

Since the wooden light switch cover has a bevel I thought it would be best to attach the postcard to the flat part and leave the bevel exposed. Place the tracing paper on top of the cover and run a finger around the edge of the flat surface to make an imprint.

Trace the screw holes and opening for the switch. Then use a straight edge to draw the imprinted area (the outline of the flat part of the cover).

Using the same “carbon paper” technique as the plastic cover, retrace the outline onto the postcard and cut to fit the light switch cover.

Since the edges of the light switch cover will be exposed, you can paint them. I decided to add a little varnish to keep the wood look, but keep the wood clean.

Once the varnish or paint is dry, paint an adhesive on the light switch cover. I used acrylic gel medium because it’s great for decoupage. However, most glues that are appropriate for paper should work fine. I like to use a brush to keep the adhesive even, and to make sure the glue goes all the way to the edge without oozing.

Glue the postcard to the light switch cover.

Attach the light switch cover. This version should stand up to use better than the plastic cover version, so I would recommend springing for the more expensive cover in places where the switch is used frequently.

Whatever version you decide to make, these light switch covers are an inexpensive way to add a cute detail to any room.

At some point I’m going to have to turn this closet into a place that stores clothes instead of a place that stores art and craft supplies. I’m hoping if I can get it really organized maybe it can do both. For now, it works fine for my supplies, but it could be better.

The biggest problem I have is rolls of paper. They end up getting damaged when I just have them leaning in a corner, and I find I’m always having to move them around to get to something else. I decided it was time to do something about it. I have always loved those perforated, metal radiator covers sold at hardware stores. I thought this would be the perfect material to build my organizer.

For this project you’ll need:

Metal radiator cover 24″ x 36″
Drill with small bit
3/4″ metal screws
Level
S-hooks
Cotton twine or wire

In the radiator cover, drill holes in the top and bottom corners (on the shorter side). I used a scrap wood block to protect my table.

Fold the metal into a cylinder and overlap the edges about an inch. Mark the other side and drill two more holes so they line up with the first holes.

Using a level, draw a line where you want to attach the top of the metal.

Line up the pre-drilled holes and attach the metal to the back of the door using a metal screw.

Drill another screw into the bottom pre-drilled holes, so the metal forms a cylinder.

Press the bottom of the metal cylinder so it’s flat against the door.

Pre-drill four more small holes along the bottom and add more screws to secure. It helps to have a friend holding things in place while drilling the holes and attaching the screws.

To give your closet organizer even more storage capabilities, use S-hooks and string or wire to attach ribbon, scissors and other supplies.

Fill with roles of paper, or anything else that needs its own spot.

If you’re like me, you’re going to need two of these.

There are endless ways to decorate Easter eggs, but here are some basics that make it easy for any member of the family to create beautiful eggs.

First, prepare the eggs. I like to boil mine because it’s easier than blowing out the eggs’ insides. Plus, the eggs become an instant snack that can be eaten at any time.

The best way to make hard boiled eggs is to put them in a big pot and cover them with cool water, so the water is about an inch over the eggs. Cover the pot and bring the water to a boil. Once the water is boiling, turn the temperature down to a slow simmer and cook for 15 to 20 minutes covered.

As soon as the eggs are done, submerge them in cold water so the yolks don’t become discolored.

I like to dry the eggs on a towel and place them back into the carton. That way, I can put them in the refrigerator while preparing the dyes.

Use any Easter egg dye you like and prepare the dyes according to the package instructions.

An easy way to embellish the eggs is to draw a design using a wax crayon. Drop the egg in the dye. The wax will displace the dye and reveal the design. This works best when using a light colored crayon and a dark dye.

You can also use melted wax to create designs. Melt a bunch of used candle stumps in a double boiler.

Dip the egg into the wax, or apply the wax with a brush.

Then dye your egg. The wax can be removed by placing the eggs in a 250-degree oven for a few minutes and then wiping the wet wax with a cloth.

Wrap a rubber band around an already dyed egg and then place in another color dye.

This works best when the original dye is lighter than the second dye.

For a multi-colored egg, just dip the ends in dye. Then, dye the whole thing in a lighter color.

If you want to get really fancy, use tissue paper and decoupage glue or acrylic gel medium to decorate your eggs. Just cut or tear the paper into any shape and paint the glue or medium on top. Keep in mind, you may not be able to eat these eggs because the dyes in the paper or glue may be toxic. However, if you make the effort to blow the insides of the egg out, this is a great technique.

While your eggs are drying, make an easy bird’s nest to display them in.

Make a small loop using any wire.

Wrap Spanish moss around the wire using a natural string like jute. The moss clumps together, so you only need to tie it in a few places.

Once the wire is covered, make another wire loop a little bigger than the first one.

Follow the same procedure, but leave the ends of the string long, so the two moss wreaths can be tied together.

Tie the wreaths together, so the smaller one is on the bottom. Then, adjust the moss to hide any exposed wire and fill in the center.

Fill the nest with Easter eggs for a nice centerpiece.

No matter how you decorate them, it’s always fun to make Easter eggs. Have a great holiday!

Easter was always one of my favorite holidays. As a kid I remember my parents would wake me up to a giant Easter basket complete with a large chocolate bunny and then getting completely dolled up, Easter, dress, bonnet, and all. Then after Easter mass, which was impossible to sit still to with a crinoline petty coat and itchy tights on, it was back home to our two bedroom apartment to dye some eggs. For me there was never any egg hunts, growing up in the city where trees and greens are hard to find it was all about the egg dying!

Last Friday I got to strut my egg dying stuff when I did a segment on Today on NBC , you can check it out here. The segment was so much fun because I was able to work with 6 terrific kid accomplices.

Here I am with Michael, Morgan and Erin (3 of my 6 accomplices)

Here are some easy peasy Easter egg dying ideas that are great to do with kids!

Egg Dye 101

Instead of buying egg dying kits you can make your own dye with store bought food coloring. Here’s how.

Here is what you need:

- Food Coloring

- 4 ounces White vinegar

- Clear mixing bowl

- 2 ounces Water

I combine 4 ounces of white vinegar with 2 ounces of water, I like to warm it up in the microwave for 30 seconds or so, warm dye attaches to eggs better, then add 10-20 drops of food coloring. Make sure your bowl is deep enough to submerge the eggs completely. The more coloring the more intense the color of the eggs and leave your eggs in longer for a deeper color, for a quick color leave your eggs in for about 3 minutes.

Sticker Perfect Eggs

Use store bought stickers to decorate eggs, you could either put them on after you die the eggs to
decorate them quick and easily or put them on BEFORE you die them, then remove them to create a
relief.

Here’s an egg with a sticker, and one with a sticker relief

Herb Decorated Eggs

Create herb decorated eggs using herb sprigs and pantyhose. Cut up nylon panty hose can hold beautiful leaves in place while you stick them in dye. I LOVED little leaves of parsley!

Dinosaur Eggs

Kids LOVE to make these dinosaur eggs because they really turn out so crackled and old looking. All
you need are pieces of cheesecloth and some dye and voila! Pre-dye an egg in a prehistoric color, then wrap your eggs in a piece of cheesecloth then paint on a darker dye with a brush. The dye will get soaked into the cheesecloth and transfer to the surface of the egg.

Rubber Cement Eggs

Who knew that rubber cement could create such beautiful eggs? Just pour some over the top of the pre-dyed eggs, let them dry and then dye them as usual. the results are amazing!

Egg Animals

Create a egg menagerie, try these baby birds and bunnies. All you need to do is cut the pieces from construction paper and glue them on with Elmer’s Glue.

The birds looked super cute in a makeshift nest

NO DYE EGGS IDEAS

Glitter Eggs

Who doesn’t love glitter, right? Create beautiful glittery eggs, just by rolling them in glue and then in a tray full of glitter.

Silk Dyed Eggs

Silk ties or pieces of old silk scarves can create these incredible eggs, just cut the tie into squares, wrap
it around the egg and let is boil in a vinegar water mixture. No Dye required!

Here is what you do:

- Cut up SILK neckties or SILK scarves into squares that could wrap around an egg

- Cut up squares of a neutral muslin, white t-shirt material, or even a light colored old bedsheet.

- Wrap an UNCOOKED egg in the silk

- Wrap the neutral fabric OVER the silk

- Twist or zip tie the eggs tight, like this

- Bowl the eggs in a PORCELAIN or GLASS pot, Needs to be NON Metal and therefor Non Reactive (I used my tea kettle!)

- Fill the bowl with enough water to cover your eggs

- Add 3 tablespoons of vinegar

- Bring water to a boil and then let it simmer for 20 mins (especially if you plan to eat the eggs)

- Let your eggs cool then unwrap them!

Tissue Paper Eggs

Tissue paper, the colorful kind that you wrap gift with can make a quick and easy to clean up dying
technique simply wet down the egg, put little bits of tissue paper on the egg, in any pattern, let it sit and
remove it!

Rice Crispy Treat Eggs & Creatures

These are super fun and don’t involve eggs! Shape rice crispy treats into “eggs” or bunnies and have kids decorate them. So fun!

So apparently, you should always start your wedding planning by picking out your dress. Well, here I am, nearly 2 months before the big day with no dress in sight. I KIND of knew what I was looking for, something Lace, with a more traditional silhouette and a slit, for some natural air conditioning, necessary when your ceremony temperature could likely exceed 95 degrees.

So I am looking for a dress that :

1. Is lightweight

2. Packs well

3. Is Lacey

4. Isn’t pure white, more of a natural or bone color

5. Costs less than 1 weeks salary!

I loved this Monique Lhuillier dress, I found this one just by googling “Lace Dress”. I love the length of this one, not too much trail-age and the slit in the front. I chatted with my pal, Fran, our resident style expert on The Chew and she warned me that the cap sleeves might not be as flattering as something with a little more coverage.

So then I found this dress, again, lacey, traditional, but slit-less so I was going to be hotter than two rats making love in a wool sock.

I didn’t bother to find out the prices of each, that SHOULD have been my starting point instead, with the coercion of my dear cousin Wanda, yesterday I set out to “break my seal” and try on some darn wedding dresses.

I decided to be open minded. I tried on whatever the spirit moved me too, even strapless dresses, which I had sworn off because unless I get my underarms waxed I am destined to have 5 o’clock shadow by the time the electric slide comes on.

Wanda took me to Red Bank, to The Barefoot Bride, owned by her pal Mayra and to another bridal shop in the area called The Sassy Chic Boutique.

At the Sassy Chic Boutique I tried on this halter number, that look sophisticated but would require me to wear a full body spank.

But I wanted to try the halter dress with the Mantilla, or more traditional veil that I thought would be perfect for Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico. I always envisioned for the dress to be shorter and the veil to be longer. Look how gorgeous this veil is, but the price, gulp, is almost as much as the dress!

I could get used to this veil thing, it’s like having your own secret hideaway.

I tried on this crazy cute bolero that made me feel like I was wearing a marshmallow.

And then I tried on this dress with a feathered bodice that made me feel a little like Wonder Woman and a little like Glenda the Good Witch.

Inspired by Angelina Jolie’s right leg, I tried on this side split number. I loved that I could reuse this dress for a future cocktail party, maybe have it died a cool color, or have it shortened a bit. Donna, the stylist and sales person, put me in this birdcage which was so gorgeous. Problem with this dress is I feel like I might have to stand like this all night.

Then it was to The Barefoot Bride and Mayra, to try on some dresses she hand picked for me. She pumped up the Salsa music and I felt like I was off to the island, all I needed was a nice, stiff, piña colada.

She wanted me to try on something really latin so I put on this Mambo inspired number and had WAY too much fun with it.

This dress gave me curves where I didn’t even know I had them. I am on to Sofia Vergara’s secret. It is all about the mermaid dress!

Loving the mermaid silhouette, who knew? I tried on an all white one, no mambo at the bottom.

Mayra put me in this matching jacket, I told you how I felt about totally strapless, and it looked super cute, but a little Star Trekkie for me. What do you guys think?

Then I tried on this lace dress that I really fell in love with. It’s all lace, like I initially wanted but has spaghetti straps and no slit. It is a little big, but you can see how it really makes an hourglass shape, and it is a floor sample so it would be crazy cheap!

I tried it on with the veil:

The nice thing about buying the dress that is inexpensive is that I can spend the extra money personalizing it to be exactly what I want. The seamstress, Gina, can make me a slit just the way I want it!

It is only my first day but I think this one might be the one! What do you guys think?

I am always looking for ways to reduce my consumption and waste. Even though it seems small, I hate using a fresh piece of paper every time I need to write a quick note. That’s why I love these little chalkboard notepads. Not only are they reusable, but they are just so darned cute!

To make them you’ll need a small piece of wood. I bought 6″x6″x1/8″ wood panels at an art supply store. Generally, these are used by painters to make art, so you can find them with the canvases and other art boards.

You’ll need to be able to hang the chalkboard, so measure your board and decide where the holes should go. I made my holes 3/4″ from the top of the board and 1 1/2″ from the sides.

Drill the holes on the front (the chalkboard side) of the board. I used a 3/16″ bit.

Prime the front of the board. As you can see from my photos, I forgot to drill my holes first before priming. I would recommend drilling then priming; it will give you a neater finished product.

Wait for the primer to completely dry. Then apply chalkboard paint with a brush or roller. I found that you need about four coats.

To class up my chalkboard, I used 3/16″ grommets to finish the holes. Wedge them in while the last coat is still drying; the paint will act as an adhesive since the grommets will be too short to attach to the backside.

On another chalkboard I used brass fasteners found in an office supply store. Wait until the paint is completely dry and you’ve finished the backside before attaching.

Since the back of the chalkboard wasn’t so pretty I decided to cover it with a piece of fabric. You could also paint both sides or glue paper instead.

Using the hole punch that came with my grommets I made holes in the appropriate places. If you don’t have a grommet maker, just make a slit in the fabric using scissors or a utility knife.

Using decoupage glue or acrylic gel medium, paint the back of the board.

Then, place the fabric on top and paint again. The fabric may stretch a little, so once it’s dry you can trim the edges.

Attach a string or ribbon. On the board with grommets I simply tied the ribbon so the board could hang from a loop.

On the board with brass fasteners I used two pieces of ribbon so the ends would be open.

Having both styles will open up the options on where they can be hung.

The style with the loop can be hung on anything protruding. This one is used on the dishwasher.

It can also be put on a doorknob or hook.

The board with the open ended ribbon can be hung just about anywhere. Put your shopping list right on the refrigerator door.

It can also be used as a place card on the back of a chair.

Once you make these chalkboards they can be used again and again. Plus, they just make a nice decoration!

As a Latina I usually don’t need much of a reason to celebrate. I try to find a little something to celebrate every day (it keeps me grounded and grateful) but this February 21st, you don’t have to look to hard to find a reason to celebrate. February 21st is Mardi Gras! The name Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday in French, and marks the period AFTER epiphany or for us, Dia De Los Reyes Magos and ends in Ash Wednesday. The reason why this Tuesday is so fat is that Mardi Gras is the last night of eating fatty, rich foods before giving a lot of the good tasting stuff awash for Lent.

So if you plan to incorporate a little Mardi Gras fun into your February, but maybe can’t make it to New Orleans, here are some ideas on how you can bring all the fun of Bourbon Street to your home!

To Decorate with!

Mardi Gras Parade Spectators Centerpiece

In New Orleans during Mardi Gras there are tons of parades. Thousands of people gather in the streets to watch these amazing spectacles. Everything is so colorful and there is music pouring out of every restaurant and sidewalk cafe, there’s nothing more festive. This centerpiece celebrates the Mardi Gras parade and it’s spectators using simple paper dolls.

Fold a strip of paper like an accordion. Draw or trace a figure making sure some part of the body touches both edges of the paper.

Without cutting the attaching extremities, cut out the figure.

Unfold. Make a whole bunch in gold, purple and green.

Attach some Mardi Gras beads to some of the figures using seed beads and thread.

Gather the paper dolls around some candle holders for a festive tabletop crowd.
